Suunto unleashes Wing earbuds

Suunto has released its Wing earbuds. Usually associated with sporting accessories such as watches, dive computers, compasses and digital services, Suunto has branched out into the headphone business with what it claims to be: “a first of its kind, developed by athletes for athletes”.

The Wings feature ‘open-ear bone conduction technology’ which the company explains makes them an ideal option whether running, climbing, cycling or hiking: “Unlike traditional headphones that transmit acoustic vibrations through the air, the Wing users a more innovative method of sound transmission. The bone-sound technology used in the Wing transmits vibrations directly to the inner ear via the cheekbones, bypassing the eardrum. This ensures that users can continue to hear sounds around them, such as a bicycle bell or the sound of an approaching vehicle, placing users’ safety in urban settings and nature as a priority. This method of sound transmission also does not create pressure in the ear canal, making them comfortable and safe to wear for long periods of time.”

The Wings have IP67 certification and are claimed to withstand temporary submersion to a maximum depth of 1m of water for a maximum time of 30 minutes, making them tough enough for all weather conditions. Suunto says they can also withstand temperatures from -20°C up to 60°C, making them ready for any climate. Made of titanium and silicone, the buds weigh 33g and have been designed so they can sit securely on the head under a helmet or cap.

Featuring three buttons, users can adjust the volume, switch to the next song or accept a phone call. This can also be controlled with the head and users can answer and end phone calls by nodding or shaking their heads as well as activating the music controls to skip songs. LED lights are placed on the side of the module behind the ear in a bid to improve safety by increasing how visible users are when wearing them. Different light modes can also be set in the Suunto app for personalisation.

Suunto claims the in-ears can be fully charged in one hour and then can be used for approximately 10 hours with a 10-minute charge giving up to three more hours of playing time. The portable charging station can be used as a power bank on the go to extend the battery life by up to 20 hours. The power level is visible on the station so users know when it needs recharging.

The Suunto Wing earbuds come in a choice of Lava Red and Black finishes.
